The conference interpreter for the president of France talked about the "outcome of mistakes" made in interpretation between heads of state
Azerbaijani Elvin Abbasbeyli is an accredited conference interpreter for the President of France and his Government. Moreover, he is the first Azerbaijani who became a member of International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC). He said in his media interview that being the interpreter of a country leader is the peak of this profession.
"No matter how experienced you are, you will always be excited. Negligence may result in disaster." - Abbasbeyli noted. According to his words, the career of a interpreter is built in years, but only one second is enough to destroy it. The specialist said that the mistakes in interpretation may immediately be corrected by bilingual diplomats. "I think that such interpreter will never be invited to meetings ever again" - he continued.
He also noted that a picture he saw in a newspaper influenced his choice of specialty: Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev with the most famous conference interpreter in USSR Pavel Palazhchenko standing between them. "Then I had not even imagined that after 15 years I would become his colleague and interpret at the meetings of European Council together with him".
