MISTAKES IN TRANSLATIONS

Living in the era of super-computers and computer-aided learning, we are still facing silly mistakes in translations.

The main issue is that a word often has several meanings. Homographs – words that are spelled the same but not pronounced the same – may cause an awkward situation for not only tourists, but also governments.

Thus, last July, the British Cabinet prepared the Brexit white paper in German, where the phrase “democratic exercise” was translated as “demokratische Übung”, which literally means "democratic gymnastics."
